Lessons

PhilosophyFile 400

Our philosophy is to bring the students to an independant and responsible behaviour. All along the session, we do not only provide them the tools to become kitesurfer, but we also share and discuss our ideas and the approach from the moment we arrive on the spot to the most advanced tricks. This reflexion allows the student to open his mind and be aware of all the different aspects of the activity : safety, etiquette, culture, respect etc..

At PureMagic, we guarantee :

  • a safe and suitable playground
  • a friendly welcome
  • highly qualified instruction
  • professionnal and experienced advices
  • the latest high-performance equipment
  • safety sytems and presence
  • a progression adapted to each student
  • "a smaller bit of french accent" from some of our instructors ... ;-) ...

Equipment

Most of our equipment is brand new 2009 from the trainer kite to the full depower kite. We use 2line, 4line and 5line Kites from 2m to 15m. All our kites use the latest technology and safety devices. Our partners for the school are: F-one, Cabrinha, Best, Mystic, Aboards, Kitefix.

The different options

PureMagic works with sessions. One session lasts usually half a day (3h) and you can take sessions either separately or in the full package.

The package 12 hours is the minimum time of instruction we usually recommend to people who want to start the sport (from scrap )and be able to go by their own after it, in a safe way. If you look at www.ikorg.com it corresponds to the level 2.

Of course depending on your background, you may reach different technical level than standard one after this time.

This course can be done within 4 half days (during the week) or if the conditions are good, within 2 full intense days (or week-end). The 12 hours are effective hours so always consider more time on the beach+preparation. During all these hours you ll be brought from the basics of a small kite control to the preparation of waterstarting and first rides on the board. All along the hours, safety notions will be taught and discussed.

The idea of the courses is to leave you progressively independent. The lessons follow a very logical and progressive way that we have been applying and

improving for more than 8 years now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your instructors certified?

All our instructors are certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO),and also by the British and Irish Kitesurfing Associations (BKSA, IKSA). Francois, the manager, is certified BPJEPS, a French License obtained from Federation Francaise de Vol Libre (FFVL). He has been teaching watersports for more than 10 years and has been instructor trainer/examiner for now 5 years. We are also certified for First Aid.

What skills do you teach in your lessons?

We follow the International Kiteboarding Organization program which is sectioned into skill levels 1, 2 and 3. we use our 10 year experience in watersport tuitions to provide you a very progressive and safe method to get your independence in the sport.

Do you conduct lessons year round?

We are the only Kitesurfing centre in Ireland proposing lessons every days of the week! The lesson season in Dublin is from March to December. We operate every windy days of the week; morning, afternoon and evening sessions! Although you may see people kiteboarding in the winter, we only propose 1-to-1 sessions for the bravest students! We also organise trips away when the winter comes, so if you look for an extreme experience abroad, in perfect conditions, feel free to contact us!!

How many hours is your lesson program?

Depending on your needs and background you can choose from 1 session to the full package. 1 session (1/2 day) represents 3 effective hours and the full package covers 4 sessions, composed of theory and practice on the water. These sessions can be done either on week days or week-ends, and if the wind allows it we can run 2 sessions in the same day.

Can I complete the full package in a same week-end?

Yes, this is an intense week end full of action and discovery. We usually make a session on the morning, a good lunch break and then back to the water for the afternoon!!

How many students are there in a class?

We have a max of 2 pairs of students with 1 instructor. We feel that this is the best ratio for safety as well as learning. During the lesson, the 2 students will learn faster by watching and assisting each other. As the lesson progresses, the instructor will do less and less and the students will do everything on their own.

What equipment do you provide during the lessons?

We will provide trainer kites and 4-line inflatable kites in all sizes from 2m2 to 15 m2, twin-tip boards, harness, lifejacket, helmet and wetsuit if required. In case we do some training on the sand, we are also equipped with mountain boards. All our equipment is 2009 and we have 100% depower kites (Fone, Cabrinha, Best)! You have no excuse from the gear then, you'll have the best and safest equipment for your training!!

Can I use my own equipment during the lesson?

For our lesson program, we usually use our equipment which has been tested to be safe and easy to learn on. After completing the course, you may choose to take private lessons to further your skills on your own equipment.

Will I be able to kiteboard after taking the course?

During our lesson program, we will try to cover all of the skills necessary to become a safe and independent kiteboarder. After the course, about 80% of the people can demonstrate the necessary skills and can go on to purchase their own equipment and practice on their own safely. However, some people may require more time to develop their skills and additional lessons may be needed.

Where do you provide your lessons?

Depending on the wind conditions, we provide our lessons either on Dollymount Beach, or in Sutton beach. During summertime (yes there is a summertime in Ireland!), we also propose safaris in the west for groups. In that case we are free to explore the huge potential of the west coast!

What time do lessons take place?

Lessons can take place from the morning, around 9am, in the afternoon, from 1.30pm and evening sessions can start around 5-6pm depending on the availability-conditions. We will check the weather forecast the day before the lesson and let you know when it will start.

What days do you offer lessons and how do make a reservation?

We offer lessons everyday there is enough wind. Lessons are usually booked up several weeks in advance so plan ahead. To book a lesson, a €100 deposit per person is required to hold your space. If there is not enough wind, or too much (we want you to come back from the sky) on the day of the lesson, the lesson will be rescheduled to another day.

What do I need to bring for the lesson?

We will provide all the equipment and safety gear you need during the lesson. For the first hours (beach session), you should wear comfortable beach clothes, hat, sunglasses and footwear. Then, for the water session, you may need a swimsuit and wetsuit. If you do not have any wetsuit no worries you can get or rent one from the shop. Take also some sun cream since you will be spending a lot of time in the hot irish sun! If it looks chilly we invite you to bring and share some hot whiskey!

As the school is fully insured, you do not need any special coverage during the lesson. However, we will strongly recommend you, as soon as you are ready to fly on your own, to get your membership/insurance policy with IKSA.

I am an accomplished wakeboarder. Will I be able to pick up kiteboarding really quick?

Although a wakeboarding background is helpful, kiteboarding is 90% kite control. You have to learn the skills necessary to safely control the kite.

Do you rent kites or boards?

We provide kites and boards for our students during a lesson. We cannot rent equipment without the supervision of an instructor.
